Free Image Compressor
Make photos smaller for websites, WhatsApp and email. Works in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
How image compression works
Large photos slow down websites, fill up storage and are slow to send. This tool makes them smaller in two ways: it saves the picture again at a lower quality setting, and it can shrink the width. Photos from a modern phone are often 4,000 pixels wide, far more than a website or chat message needs. Reducing a photo to 1,600 pixels wide often cuts the file size by more than half with little visible difference.
Start with the default settings and look at the preview. If the picture still looks good, try a lower quality. If it looks blurry or blocky, raise the quality. For web pages, aiming for roughly 100 to 300 KB per image is a common target.
Everything happens inside your browser, so your photos are not uploaded to any server and stay private. Because the image is saved again, small details are lost, so keep your original file if you may need it later.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The image is processed on your own device using your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Which format should I choose?
JPEG works well for photos and is accepted everywhere. WebP is usually smaller and also keeps transparent backgrounds, and modern browsers and apps support it.
What happens to a PNG with a transparent background?
If you choose JPEG, transparent areas become white because JPEG has no transparency. Choose WebP to keep the transparency.
Why did the file not get much smaller?
The image may already be well compressed, or it may be small to begin with. Try a lower quality or a smaller maximum width.
Why will my iPhone photo not open?
Some iPhone photos are saved in HEIC format, which many browsers cannot open. Change the camera setting to Most Compatible, or share the photo as a JPG, and try again.
Can I compress many images at once?
This version works on one image at a time. Choose another file when you are done with the first one.
