How to price home-baked goods

Many home bakers price by looking at what others charge, and end up working long hours for very little. A better method is to work out your true cost per piece first, then add the profit you want.

This calculator adds up your ingredients, packaging, your own time and other costs such as gas, electricity and delivery for one batch. It divides the total by the number of pieces you get, then sets a selling price that gives your target profit margin. The suggested price is rounded up to the nearest 10 sen so it is easy to quote and sell.

Do not forget your time. If you pay yourself RM0 an hour, you are giving away your work. Even a modest hourly rate shows whether a product is really worth making. Also think about wastage, such as failed batches or unsold items, and add a little extra to the other costs if this happens often.

Frequently asked questions

What profit margin should a home baker aim for?

Many home bakers aim for 30% to 50% after counting their own time, but it depends on your product and market. Custom or premium items can often support a higher margin than everyday items.

Should I include my own labour in the price?

Yes. Labour is a real cost. If you leave it out, you may think you are profitable when you are actually earning very little per hour.

How do I account for failed or unsold batches?

Add a small allowance to your other costs, for example 5% to 10% of the batch cost, so that occasional wastage does not eat your profit.

Why is the price rounded up?

Rounding up to the nearest 10 sen gives clean prices and slightly protects your margin. You can always choose a nearby price that suits your customers.

Can I use this for food other than baked goods?

Yes. It works for any handmade product where you make items in batches, such as snacks, sauces, crafts or candles. Just enter the costs and pieces for your product.
